How to seal window and door frames

How to seal window and door frames

An average home loses up to 30% of its heating and cooling energy through air leaks. The most significant air leaks tend to occur around windows and doors. To stop air leaks and prevent your home heating and cooling rands from vanishing in the wind, it’s important to seal any air leaks around windows and doors.

GOOD TO KNOW:

Look for a paintable sealant if you plan to paint over it.

HERE’S HOW:

Preparation

  • Contact area must be dry, clean, sound and free from contaminating substances such as oil, grease, asphalt tar and dust.
  • Clean and degrease surface with methylated spirits or isopropyl alcohol. Dampness in porous substrates can be tolerated.

Application

  • Cut tip of nozzle at the angle required. Apply abe® PAINTERS acrylic sealant from a caulking gun using sufficient pressure to ensure adequate contact with sides of joint.
  • The surface of the joint may be smoothed over with a tooling spatula that has been sprayed with a mild solution of liquid soap and water.

Paint

  • Paintable in one hour at 25 ºC.
