How to waterproof a shower

Plastering onto brickwork, concrete blocks, drywalling, ceiling board, and as a finishing plaster over sand cement renders is an integral part of any house build or renovation – it leaves the option of a smooth durable finish or a brush / textured finish on walls and ceilings you can admire for years to come.

What you'll need

  • 1 x Container to mix the plaster with water
  • 1 x Helical mortar mixer
  • 1 x Trowel
  • 1 x Steel or rubber faced float
  • 1 x Carpet or rubber face float
  • 1 x Large paint brush to sprinkle water onto the surface
  • 1 x Gloves and old clothes
  • 1 x a.b.e.®.lite finishing plaster – 40 kg bags

Do not mix more abe®.lite then you can use in an hour.

Here's How: 4 Steps


Step 1

Preparation

  • All surfaces to be clean, dry, sound, free from all laitance, fungal growth, grease, oil, or loose and flaking particles.
  • Use clean tools.

Step 2

Mixing

  • Water/powder: 55 – 65 ml water to 100 g plaster.
  • Add 40 kg a.b.e.®.lite to 22 – 26 L of water.
  • Allow soaking for 5 minutes.
  • Mix until lump-free to a smooth paste.
  • For best results use water that is 20 °C to 25 °C, approximately 22 L per bag.

Step 3

Application

  • Apply to clean surface.
  • Sprinkle water onto the surface.
  • Apply a.b.e.®.lite finishing plaster onto the surface with a steel or rubber-faced float.

After 20 – 30 minutes

  • Level with steel float.

After 45 – 55 minutes

  • Moisten the float that has a carpet or rubber face finish and float the surface to raise the fines to the surface (“fat”).

After 60 – 70 minutes

  • Final finishing by scraping off the excess fines and proceeding by steel floating to obtain a smooth polished finish.
  • Do not mix more abe®.lite then you can apply.
  • Do not apply less than 3 mm thick.
  • Do not retemper the mix, if the mix becomes unworkable, discard it and mix a fresh batch.
  • Pot life of mixed plaster: 40 – 70 minutes.
  • Initial set: 65 – 90 minutes. Final set: 75 – 130 minutes.
  • Typical drying time on board is 2.5 – 3.5 hours

Cleaning Clean

  • all tools and mixing vessels thoroughly with water before mixing the next batch.
